What Is Geriatric Social Work?

As we age, our needs change, and often, different needs in different areas of our life—physical, social, emotional, financial—begin to overlap. Whether they're dealing with a major life change, such as moving or recovering from an illness, or simply trying to navigate the aging process, many elderly individuals can benefit from having a trained professional advocate who can connect them with the resources and help they need. This is where geriatric social workers (also known as gerontological social workers) come in.

What Do Geriatric Social Workers Do?

A geriatric social worker is a special type of social worker for seniors. More specifically, geriatric social workers address the needs of older adults with the ultimate goal of helping them to live happy, healthy, and independent lives. In addition to having a degree in social work, geriatric social workers also receive special training or education around working with older adults.

Geriatric social work encompasses the social, physical, medical, and economic issues that affect older adults. Below are a few examples of the sort of help that these professionals provide:

  • Care coordination

  • Counseling or therapy, such as for bereavement

  • Crisis management, such as for a personal emergency or health issue

  • Interventions

  • Connection with resources or community-based services

  • Benefits or financial aid applications

  • Transition plans, such as from one living situation to another or between hospitals, rehabilitation centers, and care facilities

  • Social or enrichment activities

  • Advocacy

  • Caregiver support

Who Can Benefit From Geriatric Social Work?

There isn't a one-size-fits-all definition for who should receive social services care for the elderly. Any older adult who is struggling to cope with obstacles or have their needs met might benefit from geriatric social work care. This might include individuals who are dealing with complex health issues, struggling financially or on a fixed income, feeling isolated and/or overwhelmed, or don't have much caregiver support from friends and family.
