Mental Health for Seniors

Mental health is a significant part of our overall health and well-being. Poor mental health can have severe consequences on an individual's quality of life, physical health, and more. That's true for seniors as much as it is for anyone else—and yet, for a variety of reasons, mental health issues in the elderly often go undiagnosed or overlooked entirely.

Here, we'll review some of the common mental health issues that affect seniors, their symptoms and causes, and steps seniors can take to safeguard their mental health.

Protecting Against Cognitive Decline

For many seniors, brain health and cognitive function are one of their top concerns related to the aging process. According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), 11.1% of adults report experiencing cognitive decline symptoms (such as confusion or memory loss) in the last year. Although some seniors never experience anything more than mild cognitive impairment (MCI), it's estimated that 10-15% of individuals who do experience MCI will develop dementia.

Activities of Daily Living: What They Are and What They Mean

Activities of daily living (or ADLs, as they're commonly referred to) are a frequent component of conversations about senior living and care. Activities of daily living refers to the group of tasks and skills that an individual must be able to perform in order to live an independent life, including being able to feed and dress oneself.

Assisted Living: Pros and Cons

It's a choice that most seniors are faced with at some point: whether to enter a continuing care or assisted living facility, or whether to continue living independently and age in place.

Of course, there's no right answer to that decision, although that doesn't make the choice itself any easier.

Previously, we've written about the drawbacks and benefits of aging in place at home. Here, we'll cover the other side of the equation, and give a brief overview of the pros and cons of assisted living.

What Is Geriatric Social Work?

As we age, our needs change, and often, different needs in different areas of our life—physical, social, emotional, financial—begin to overlap. Whether they're dealing with a major life change, such as moving or recovering from an illness, or simply trying to navigate the aging process, many elderly individuals can benefit from having a trained professional advocate who can connect them with the resources and help they need. This is where geriatric social workers (also known as gerontological social workers) come in.

The Importance of Good Nutrition for Seniors

Eating healthy can be difficult even under the best of circumstances. In a world awash with fast food and unhealthy processed foods, spending the time, money, and energy to prepare or obtain nutritious meals is often challenging.

For seniors, maintaining healthy eating habits is often even harder. As a group, seniors are more likely to experience challenges such as reduced mobility or lack of transportation, health problems that may reduce their energy or appetite, changes in their financial situation that make it harder to afford nutritious foods, and more. As a result of one or more of these factors, it's not uncommon for seniors to suffer from malnutrition or food insecurity.

A Complete Guide to Senior Fall Prevention

According to the Centers for Disease Control (CDC), each year sees around 36 million falls among elderly individuals—of which approximately 32,000 end in death. Taking an active approach to fall prevention for seniors is one of the most important things you can do to keep you and your loved ones safe.

Fitness for Seniors: Getting Started

Staying physically active is an essential part of being able to maintain a healthy, active lifestyle at any age. For seniors, however, exercise can present something of a challenge. Changes in mobility and energy levels, health problems, and fear of injury can all make older individuals reluctant to get moving.

For that reason, it's important that exercise for seniors not only helps each person meet his or her fitness goals, but also aligns with their abilities, preferences, and lifestyle. Below, we've outlined some general guidelines around fitness for seniors, as well as the best exercises for seniors of all abilities and skill levels.

Rehabilitation Therapy for Seniors: What It Is and How It Works

Nearly everyone experiences health-related setbacks in their lives at some point. In the event of a major injury or illness, the healing process involves more than just medications. For people who have experienced physical trauma or medical treatment that resulted in loss of functionality (either physical, mental, or cognitive), rehabilitation therapy helps them to regain some or all of their lost abilities, and hopefully enables them to live independently again.

Why Community Is Essential for Seniors

In our modern, digital age, it's easier than ever to feel isolated from the people around you. This tendency has been highlighted and exacerbated by the social distance habits and work-from-home lifestyle that many were forced to adopt as a result of the COVID-19 pandemic.

Perhaps no group is more susceptible to loneliness and social isolation than seniors, many of whom are homebound due to mobility issues, lack of transportation, or other factors. And research has shown that loneliness and social isolation in seniors can have serious consequences.

How To Help Seniors Live Independently

Surveys have shown that around 90% of seniors prefer aging in place in their own homes. While everyone's motivations are different, wanting to maintain independence and autonomy frequently factors into the equation for many seniors.

However, aging presents a lot of challenges that may complicate that desire for independent senior living. Changes in mobility and cognitive function, lack of transportation, and health issues can all impair an elderly person's ability to perform activities of daily living, but these obstacles are often easily navigable.

What Does In-Home Care for Seniors Look Like?

In-home care services for seniors offer an ideal solution for older adults who prefer to age in place rather than moving into a long-term care facility, but who may need a little extra help as they grow older. According to the Family Caregiver Alliance, around 80% of seniors who receive assistance live in private homes rather than care communities or nursing homes. For these individuals, in-home care is often crucial to allowing them to maintain their independence while also ensuring that their needs are met.

Seniors and Transportation

Reliable access to transportation is an essential part of maintaining an independent lifestyle. However, as we age, accessible transportation often becomes more complicated. Factors such as cognitive decline and reduced vision capabilities may eventually render some older adults unable to drive.

For seniors in this position, the options aren't always good—in fact, a survey by the National Aging and Disability Transportation Center found that 68% of older adults (over two-thirds!) believe that finding an alternative means of transportation would be difficult if they were no longer able to drive.

Dangers of Falls for Seniors

For most people, tripping and falling isn't a big deal. The vast majority of the time, we expect to walk away with a scratch, a bruised ego, perhaps a sprain in extreme cases—but all those scenarios are more inconvenient than dangerous for the average person.

Not so for everyone, however. For elderly adults, falls can be serious, even life-threatening. In 2016, elderly fall statistics indicated that nearly 25,000 individuals aged 75 or older died as a result of falling. And even when they aren't deadly, falls can result in major injuries such as hip fractures, broken bones, and traumatic brain injuries. Falls are particularly dangerous for seniors who live alone or have other underlying health conditions and/or mobility problems that may prevent them from being able to get up easily again.

How to Help Seniors with Activities of Daily Living

For seniors, one of the key factors of aging in place successfully is support from other people. Whether those people are designated caregivers, hired in-home help, or friends and family that drop by from time to time, having help is essential for maintaining safety and quality of life as seniors get older.

If you're new to the caregiver experience, however, knowing what kind of help to provide isn't always straightforward—not to mention, some people find it awkward to ask their loved ones what kind of activities or chores they need help with.

Of course, each individual's specific needs will be different depending on their situation. If you're feeling lost about how to help a senior citizen with a daily schedule, the following areas are a good place to start:

Aging in Place: Pros and Cons

If you've started to explore senior living and retirement options (either for yourself or someone else), chances are you've stumbled across the phrase aging in place at least a couple of times. While it's not complicated, the term can be a little confusing for people who aren't familiar with it.

Holistic Care for Seniors: What It Is and What It Looks Like

When most of us think of health and wellness, we probably envision a reactive, segmented model: we might visit doctors when something is going wrong with our health, but rarely on a proactive basis. Similarly, we typically visit different professionals depending on whether we are seeking treatment for physical, mental, or other concerns.

However, although this model of care is the norm, it might not be the ideal approach, particularly for seniors whose environmental, physical, social, and mental needs overlap. More and more, healthcare providers and individuals are recognizing the need to shift to a holistic care approach, which emphasizes proactive care that is intended to address the mental, physical, and spiritual needs as a whole, rather than as distinct categories.

What Is Respite Care?

Often, one of the biggest challenges for caregivers is the struggle to balance their caregiving duties with other aspects of their lives, such as work, family responsibilities, or even their own well-being. Caregivers who are stretched too thin may be at risk of caregiver burnout, which is known to have detrimental effects on the mental and physical health of the people who experience it.

Many caregivers rely on respite care to help them avoid caregiver burnout and balance the conflicting demands on their time. Respite care is any alternative arrangement that allows their loved one to still receive the help and attention they need, while temporarily allowing the primary caregiver a break.

Home Safety for Seniors: What You Need to Know

Feeling safe in your own home is important. For seniors, the concept of safety takes on an entirely different dimension as their mobility, lifestyle, and needs change. Daily living activities such as climbing stairs, cleaning, cooking, and even bathing may become more difficult—or even dangerous.

Especially given the large number of seniors who prefer to age in place rather than enter an assisted living facility or retirement community, ensuring home safety for elderly individuals is crucial. Fortunately, not all home modifications for seniors are exceptionally arduous or expensive, but they do require some forethought and effort.

How to Talk to Older Parents About Their Care Needs

It's one of the more difficult conversations you'll have to have: how to talk to your aging parents about their changing needs. Whether you're just suggesting bringing in some help around the house or something a little more drastic, it's not uncommon for seniors to be resistant to these sorts of conversations. This is understandable, given that many older folks see home care or assisted living as surrendering their independence.

Nonetheless, if approached with tact and kindness, these conversations can be productive. When considering how to talk to your elderly parents, here are a few guidelines to keep in mind:

The Importance of an Interdisciplinary Healthcare Team for Seniors

If you've ever struggled with a chronic illness—or any medical condition that required regular care—you're familiar with the frustrating back-and-forth shuffle between different types of healthcare professionals. You might first see your primary care provider, who might refer you to a specialist, who might send you to have some tests done…and so on. Further, at each step of the process, you're likely to have to re-explain the problem and paraphrase anything your previous doctor said. It's an exhausting process for everyone, but for seniors who have limited mobility and might be dealing with multiple health-related issues at once, it's especially difficult.

For these reasons, many public health experts have begun discussing the need for an integrated healthcare system, especially where seniors are concerned. An integrated healthcare system is composed of an interdisciplinary team of healthcare professionals who all collaborate and communicate about their patients' treatment.

Recognizing and Preventing Caregiver Burnout

Burnout is a common issue amongst those who care for elderly or disabled persons—in fact, it's prevalent enough that it's even been given its own name: caregiver burnout. But in spite of the fact that over a third of family caregivers describe their situations as highly stressful, it can still be difficult to recognize caregiver burnout when it's happening to you or someone you know.

How to Help Aging Parents and Grandparents: First Steps

As a population, we're aging—and quickly, too. Data from a United Nations report predicted that by 2050, the number of people over the age of 65 will have grown to 16% of the total population, marking a significant increase from the 9% recorded in 2019. Between this trend and the significant increase in average life expectancy (from 66.8 years in 2000 to 73.4 years in 2019), many people are finding themselves grappling with the difficult question of how to help aging parents and grandparents.

Senior Living: What Are Your Options?

Deciding where to live out your golden years is an important choice. And, as with any major turning point in life, it's good to be aware of your options so that you can make the most informed decision possible. Below are a few types of senior living options to consider as you prepare to make the choice:

Evaluating Alternatives to Nursing Homes and Assisted Living

Kaiser Family Foundation estimated that just under 1.3 million seniors resided in certified nursing facilities in 2020—that's about 2.5% of the senior population in the United States. Nursing homes provide residential and medical care for seniors who are no longer capable of living on their own; in particular, many nursing home residents suffer from some sort of disability or dementia.

The decision to place a loved one in a nursing home is often a difficult one, especially if the senior individual in question has needs that are less intensive, if they are capable of living independently to some degree, don't want to leave their home, or some combination of the three. In situations like these, there is rarely a straightforward or right answer, but it helps to be aware of the alternatives to nursing homes and assisted living facilities.
